CHOI&CHOI Gallery presents ‘Sweetscapes and Strangos’, a two-person exhibition featuring the works of Uwe Henneken and Pierre Knop. Both artists delve into the tradition of landscape painting, utilizing rich blends of techniques, styles, and colours, whilst exploring the intricacies of human existence and our relationship with the world that surrounds us.

At the heart of Uwe Henneken's work lies a poignant meditation on humanity's relationship with the ever-ephemeral concept of time. His canvases are rich tapestries of complex and ambivalent symbolism, which he populates with figures in a state of perpetual transition against a backdrop of psychedelic terrains and mystical lands. These figures are all in search of their own unique orientation and serve as allegorical representations of contemporary human existence - emblematic of the distracted and often disoriented denizens of our rapidly changing, globalized, and digitized world. They grapple with the perennial search for stability and direction, cast adrift in a ceaseless sea of transformation.

Henneken's figures are rendered with a stencil-like precision, their semi-materialized forms devoid of shadows yet vibrantly adorned with a contrasting array of colours and patterns. This paradoxical existence mirrors the modern human condition, oscillating between past and future, with the present moment often slipping away unnoticed. Despite the gravity of his subject matter, Henneken's paintings radiate an undeniable optimism. Vivid, vibrant colours infuse each canvas, while the portrayal of his subjects reflects a compassionate understanding of the human condition and the artist's personal quest for meaning.

Henneken's works reveal multi-dimensional layers and timelines, offering glimpses of potential paths out of the intricate webs of form and pattern. They remind us that, even in the midst of chaos, every individual holds the power to choose their own direction. This fundamental realization is epitomized in the works Handschlag(Handshake), 2023 and Hingabe(Surrender), 2023 which underscore the significance of forgiveness and self-sacrifice on the journey toward being in the present. As the writer Thomas Hübl states, "When I know that the path is infinite, I have time for the now."

Pierre Knop's paintings invite viewers to explore idyllic realms, where picturesque landscapes and enchanting scenes come alive with otherworldly hues and imaginative details. They beckon the viewer to step into these dreamlike settings, often featuring serene mountainous landscapes and calm seascapes. Guided by an intuitive creative process, Knop breathes life into mesmerizing narratives on his canvases. His artistic process navigates the multidisciplinary nature of painting, transcending the boundaries between drawing and painting, gravity and levity, order and chaos.

Much like his Romanticist predecessors, Knop's contemporary romanticism encapsulates the magnificence of nature and humanity's profound connection to it. Each painting is a testament to his reverence for nature's beauty, often tinged with a touch of enigmatic darkness. Expressive brushstrokes infuse vitality into his landscapes, while the bold and harmonious blend of colours evoke an intricate inner world manifest onto the canvas. Knop’s series of landscape paintings was born during the pandemic and its subsequent lockdown, when Knop found himself confined to his studio in the Alps. As such, the awe-inspiring magnitude of nature in his work embodies the profound interplay between horror and nostalgia, danger and shelter, ruthlessness and the primal allure that resides within the core of the natural world.

Knop's compositions emanate from a profound wellspring of memories – borrowing from both personal and collective experiences. Scenes from the past, found images, and photographic impressions coalesce onto the canvas. Knop, who recently embraced fatherhood, delivers an ode to the profound beauty of human connection and the ordinary moments that weave the fabric of our lives. This celebration of the timeless allure of everyday moments is evident in works like Charlotte, 2023, Father and Son, 2023, and First Hike, 2023. They are intimate narratives, paying heartfelt homage to the familial connections that have enriched his life, blending the personal with the universal in a symphony of colours and forms.

Henneken's fantastical symbolism harmonize with Knop's idyllic landscapes, creating a rich and diverse artistic dialogue. Navigating between the dreamlike beauty of Knop's scenes and the contemplative depth of Henneken's work, we explore the boundaries between nostalgia and introspection, between the splendour of nature and the intricacies of the human psyche.
