SH GALLERY SEOUL is hosting a solo exhibition titled "BREATH" by Ryo Koizumi (小泉 遼). This exhibition marks his first solo show in Seoul, featuring his prominent painting series 'Halo' series as the centerpiece, along with the 'Locus' and 'enso' series.

"Concentrating on breath, I face the canvas. Drawn to painting, the act of applying paint to the canvas repeats, and my mind empties."

Koizumi explores the connection between the physical act of breathing and the act of painting. A common circular pattern is repeated in all of his series of works. This pattern, recurring within an endless loop, transcends time, leaving traces of the moment when one faces the canvas and breathes positively, confirming their existence and leaving a record.

Since 2016, Koizumi was active as a calligrapher, and in 2019, he introduced the 'enso' series, which inherits the Eastern mystery of drawing the basic stroke of calligraphy in a continuous circle. Subsequently, he has evolved his art from calligraphy to painting, exploring composition and medium. The 'Halo' series, born in 2021, abstracts the pure visual image of light seen in the air, embracing the randomness of color, and represents a new dimension of Koizumi's work filled with the power of light. Starting in 2022, the 'Locus' series presents dialectical expressions such as division and unity, dynamic and static, Western and Eastern.

"I continue to pile up paint and interact with the work. Then, through elements of regularity, spontaneity, and color, I express light in my paintings. I hope that the audience feels a deep resonance of emotions when they view my work." -RYO KOIZUMI-
