This exhibition is a retrospective of Change Ucchin (1917–1990), who, along with Lee Jungseop and Park Soo Keun, is regarded as a key figure in the history of Korean modern and contemporary art for his depiction of Korean sentiments. Chang Ucchin’s paintings sport simple, concise motifs such as trees, houses, the sun and moon, and magpies. Though he is often described as “an artist who draws like an innocent child,” his oeuvre reflects a complex mix of not only Western art but also Goguryeo tomb murals, folk paintings, landscapes with figures, Buddhist paintings, and other elements of Korean traditional art. His earlier works as well as oil paintings, ink-wash paintings, marker drawings, prints, cover art, and illustrations will be on display, shedding new light on the nature of his art and the significance of his uniquely Korean compositions in the history of Korean art.
